A group of 13 enthusiastic VCU graphic design students collectively known as the Happiness-Coalition are on a mission: to spread happiness here in Richmond. Design Rebels, facilitated by Noah Scalin, expands what students learn inside of the classroom beyond classroom walls. Each semester, class participants are challenged to use the power of socially conscious graphic design to engage and serve the Richmond community. In anticipation for the Happiness-Coalition’s showing this Friday at Gallery 5, Dirty Richmond was invited for a behind the scenes look at this inspiring collective.

During my evening with the Happiness-Coalition, I thought that this may in fact be the happiest class ever! There was definitely a strong collaborative aurora in the room, and with words such as “smile” and “happy” written in assuring hues of blues and greens, it’s nearly impossible to not to be in good spirits.

The Happiness-Coalition will be hosting a night of positivity and distributing postcards THIS FIRST FRIDAY at Gallery 5.
