Sometimes in less than 5 minutes of meeting someone you just know they are genuine and sincere and those qualities really carry over to Nelly Kate’s music. I didn’t know Nelly Kate in the fall of 2009 when I first saw her play an opening set for tUnE-yArDs in Charlottesville, her voice had a rare clarity and her music a feeling of nostalgia that I never forgot. Coincidentally a year and a half later, Nelly Kate would move to Richmond and I’ve had the pleasure to become good friends with.

Nelly Kate has just finished her first analog recording, ‘ISH ISH’ and her sound has progressively evolved into swelling melodic sound scapes under her chilling vocals. Nelly creates, “a warmth akin to nostalgic memories of youthful days spent playing pretend” (from macrock.org).

I photographed Nelly on a late fall afternoon at Belle Isle. Listen to Nelly Kate’s first single “Blue Badges” and visit her Kickstarter page to learn about how you could help support this amazing artist in funding her album.
